Cambridgeshire Winter Walks Amongst the Snowdrops

Small, but perfectly formed, snowdrops are a joy to behold on a winter walk through the Cambridgeshire countryside. These delicate blooms, the first flowers to brave the chill of the season, have been quietly storing energy since last March. Now, they’re ready to emerge en masse, brightening the greyest of winter days and warming our hearts as we stroll through the gardens.

At Chippenham Park Gardens, near Newmarket, the first snowdrops are already peeping through under the beech trees, weaving their way along our woodland and lakeside winter walks. For us, the thrill of spotting these early flowers marks more than just the changing season—it’s the start of a new year filled with life, beauty, and the joy of welcoming visitors back to one of the best winter gardens in Cambridgeshire.

Thousands of white snowdrops blanket the park in natural drifts, creating picture-perfect scenes as they wind through our paths, lakes, and canals. While the most spectacular displays can be found at the far end of the lake and deep into the woods, you’ll see uplifting clusters of these winter wonders from the moment you step into the gardens. Bright yellow aconites add bursts of colour beneath the beech trees, mingling with miniature iris, primulas, and the tiny pink blooms of cyclamen coum.

A highlight of any winter visit is Adrian’s Walk, a winding trail that leads you through some of the garden’s most fragrant late-winter and early-spring plants. The path is lined with citrus-scented Witch-Hazels, sweetly perfumed Daphnes, and the honey-like Sarcococca, creating an intoxicating mix of scents to enjoy on a crisp winter’s day. It’s these thoughtful details that make our winter walks so special and why we believe Chippenham Park offers one of the best snowdrop walks in Cambridgeshire.

For the next few weeks, however, it’s really the snowdrops that take centre stage. Large swathes of Galanthus nivalis (the common snowdrop) shimmer in the low winter sunlight, creating a heartening sight that’s hard to rival. These hardy blooms are a true sign that spring is on its way, bringing hope and beauty to even the coldest days.

Chippenham Park Gardens, located just outside Newmarket, will be open every day from Saturday 18th January 2025 until Wednesday 16th April 2025, from 10am until 4pm (last entry at 3pm). Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through our gardens, exploring the woodland walks, lakes, and canals.

Stop by our cosy Potting Shed Café, open daily until the park closes at 4pm, where you’ll find warming sustenance to enjoy after your winter walk. Seasonal plants will also be available to purchase nearby, giving you the perfect opportunity to take a piece of the garden’s magic home with you.
